Over 250 pioneering green entrepreneurs from 80 countries took part in the 2018 clim@ competition to win awards to scale up their businesses. The most promising ideas included recycling livestock waste into cellulose fibers, paper, and bioplastics; making sustainable packaging solutions out of agricultural waste and mushroom mycelium; and innovative solutions for urban electromobility.

A method and technology that transforms cow manure into biomaterials for producing clothes and other products.
Jalila Essaïdi, director of Inspidere B.V., developed a method and technology to transform cow manure directly into biomaterials: Mestic®. With Mestic® we completely deconstruct manure and utilize the obtained cellulose for new biomaterials. This revolutionary technology directly transforms manure into bioplastic, biotextile and biopaper. A circular solution that will not only solve the present cow manure problem, but will also provide a sustainable source of biomaterials to the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, by providing farmers with a revenue stream other than milk production, they will become less dependent on the scale of their agricultural business for a good income. This reduces the need to expand current agricultural operations which directly results again in a reduction of excess manure and increased animal welfare.
Currently, 44% of producing fiber is defined by its raw materials. Mestic® gets the raw materials for free, that enables us to produce at or below current market price. A 150 gram t-shirt produced with Mestic® reduces GWP by 1 kg CO2 eq.
Late 2015, Jalila Essaïdi was approached by the agricultural sector of Noord-Brabant to find a solution for the surplus cow manure that is being produced. She took the bull by the horns and developed Mestic®.

Biomyc is a starting biotech company that develops products, inspired by natural processes, through local untapped resource utilization.
Currently we are using second generation biomass /agricultural waste/ and mushroom mycelium to develop a composite material resembling styrofoam.
Depending on the material treatment process, one can produce a multitude of products like – packaging, composite boards, construction materials and even leather.
We are interested in the packaging and furniture markets and are currently producing prototypes of furniture composite boards well as product and transport packaging solutions.
We are finishing our in-depth market research and are currently speaking with key stakeholders in both markets to pinpoint the best niche for initial market penetration. We have gathered product requests from various companies of different sizes. From a small cosmetics company to one of the largest wine producers in the country.
Our goal is to finish preparations for series A investment by the end of 2018 and use it to create a demonstrator plant to run our initial pilot production series by the end of 2019.
a solution to urban freight mobility issues through their electric bike trailer
NÜWIEL is a Hamburg based technology startup developing intelligent electric transportation solutions. The startup was founded in 2016 by Fahad Khan, Natalia Tomiyama and Sandro Rabbiosi.
Urban freight mobility contributes up to 21% CO2 emissions and 19% of energy use of all urban travels and causes more than 30% of other pollutants. This is not only significantly contributing to climate change but is also negatively affecting public health, as 70% of the cancerous and other dangerous substances are caused by traffic emissions.
NÜWIEL is addressing a need for safe and convenient sustainable mobility solution in last mile logistics. We developed an electric bicycle trailer with a safety brake system and patented technology, which enables instant synchronization between the trailer and a bike. In other words, the trailer automatically accelerates and brakes. That means that a cyclist doesn’t make any additional effort when cycling with the trailer, yet carries up to 150kg without noticing it. The NÜWIEL-trailer can be connected to any bicycle or electric bike. Disconnected from the bike the trailer can be used as an e-powered handcart inside the buildings and pedestrian areas.
NÜWIEL’s ultimate goal is to empower more logistics companies as well as private people to contribute a more resilient and sustainable future. Because even one NÜWIEL-trailer running 72km a day substitutes 6.300 km of the motor vehicle and saves up to 2.000 t of CO2 emissions per year.

The amount of plastic equal to the size of a whale is thrown away into the Global Ocean every minute. This plastic goes mostly from the usage of disposable goods: water bottles, plastic bags, and daily hygiene items are the main enemies of nature nowadays.
The product each of us uses twice a day is a toothbrush. Every day hotels and airlines throw away approximately 6 tons of plastic disposable toothbrushes.
Therefore, we thought about a huge human irresponsibility of using the disposable goods. And that’s how the idea of Effa was born. Effa fights all these problems. Effa is a disposable toothbrush made of paper and eco-clean materials, caring about nature. Effa is made for hotels, airlines, and prisons to replace the plastic analogs and make everyone care about the environment since the early morning and till late night. a recovery of fiber reinforced composites offering a recycling and waste management solution
TRC is a spin-off of Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), dedicated to the development and exploitation of technologies for recycling waste composites.
TRC has developed R3FIBER, with the aim of allowing the integral recovery of fiber reinforced composites solving the global problem arising from the management of these materials (they are nowadays dump in landfills). The disruptive, highly energy-efficient, and clean technology is able to obtaining high quality glass and carbon fibres, fuels and energy. The recovered high-quality fibers can be re-used within the respective sectors of origin, thus contributing to circular economy and reducing the carbon emissions of fibers productors (a growing market of 2,5 billions of euros).
R3FIBER can manage the waste at a lower price, 30% cheaper, avoiding the dumping into landfills, and transforming this waste into products.On the other hand, TRC can provide composite companies, high quality fibers with a lower price than the commercial ones, at least 25% lower.
The use of this tech will save a high amount of CO2 to the atmosphere, avoiding the manufacturing of new fibers. In 5 years TRC tech will save 26 MTons of CO2 to the atmosphere.
Episome is a biotechnology company that was founded as a research&development laboratory. Episome Biotech focuses on industrial enzyme technologies. Episome aims to provide sustainable and environmentally friendly products for biogas, textile, leather, paper, starch, detergent, rubber and biofuel industries.
Episome offers innovative and sustainable solutions which solve paper industry’s massive waste problem. Episome’s newly developed technology, Epicellulyse XT, enables use of paper mill sludge (waste) in biogas/renewable energy and organic fertilizer production. Previously paper mill sludge was not suitable for biogas production due to its cellulose content. The material caused crust formation in biogas digesters and hard to digest cellulose did not release enough nutrients for biogas production. One possibility was to use commercial cellulases, but their costs were not feasible for such an operation. Epicellulyse XT is used in pretreatment of paper mill sludge and making it ideal for biogas process. It also helps the companies to reduce their carbon footprint.

Solagro Smart Recycling is a Smart City start-up, that focuses on creating new solutions for recycling available to everyone. Our goal is to help every individual, company and institution to contribute to a greener world by providing reliable and affordable recycling system that stimulates its users to recycle, by introducing the gamification of recycling.
Our smart recycling system is made out of smart aluminium can and PET bottle crushers and a mobile app. The system motivates its users to recycle through the process of gamification, by awarding them with valuable prizes through our mobile app. At the same time it saves time and money for the recycling companies by reducing recycling cost up to 30%.
Solagro operates in seven countries where it has more than 30 satisfied clients, some of which are the world’s biggest beverage brands.
So far, we participated in 10 music festival, recycled more than 200t of material and helped more than 3000 pupils to learn about recycling process.
Tagaddod is a waste to value startup. Currently focusing on collecting used cooking oil from Businesses and households via an innovative system, and then turns it to Biodiesel and other speciality products that are sold in Europe.
Tagaddod launched its products (Biodiesel and Refined used cooking oil) in June 2015, after getting certified from ISCC-EU (International sustainability Carbon Certificate), testing the market with small orders, then managing to grow our production from 10 tons per month to over 100 tons per month by early 2017. In less than two years of operation, Tagaddod has over 8,000 clients who use the service.

It enables generation capacity and storage to grow according to local demand, optimising revenues and guaranteeing stable tariffs at the same time. Therefore, each Solartainer® can represent a profitable business model even on a very small scale for low initial demand.
The Solartainer® starts at 45 kWp solar power capacity and 60 kWh battery storage, which is enough power to supply 300 rural-standard-households of eight people and even multiple production machines for small businesses. The web platform combines water resource engineering tools, GIS layers, and legal land resources to quickly query and print the resources that farmers need to make correct plans for farm development and water and soil management.
The ResursConect team of technicians will work with the farmer to bridge the digital-analog gap typical in agriculture and provide the farmer with a quick and cost effective printed portfolio of natural resource maps and technical data including calculations on water usage.
